You’ll also want to make sure you choose only competent contractors. The most reliable way to find the best tradesmen is to ask friends and family for recommendations. But what do you do if you can’t find a contractor this way? The following organisations are a good place to start:

Electrical alterations

Find a professional electrician from NICEIC or ECA

Plumbing

For qualified plumbers, check out WaterSafe

Gas appliances

Always use a Gas Safe registered contractor

Other heating systems

Look at OFTEC for oil fired heating engineers and HETAS for biomass or solid fuel heating systems.
