Belper in Derbyshire has been named as Britain’s Best High Street in the Great British High Street Awards.

Fighting off tough competition from towns across Britain, Belper won the Market Town category and then the overall title. The judges were very impressed with how Belper has been transformed into a go-to destination for locals and visitors, with the majority of initiatives being led by volunteers.

The winners in the other categories were:

  • City Category – Norwich Lanes
  • Coastal Category – Colwyn Bay
  • Local Centre – Baroldswick, Lancashire
  • Market Town – Belper, Derbyshire
  • Village Category – Broxburn, West Lothian
  • Town Centre – Wantage, Oxfordshire
  • London High Street – Kingston, Market Place

The contest was run by the Future High Streets Forum and received more than 135 entries from across the UK. The competition has highlighted new and innovative ways to boost the use of local high streets. In particular how traders and communities around the country are working hard to help shopping streets evolve to be places where people want to shop, socialise and work.

The winners share £50,000 prize money and will receive dedicated support and mentoring from industry experts.
