Help to Buy in Wales

Topline details of the Help to Buy equity loan scheme in Wales are:

  • first-time buyers or existing homeowners are eligible
  • available on new-builds from participating builders up to a value of £300,000
  • the property must be your only property and you must live in it yourself
  • a nominal administration fee applies monthly and then interest is charged on the Government loan from the 6th year onwards
  • not available on part exchange purchases.

Note: 26 February 2015 – The Welsh Government’s Minister for Communities & Tackling Poverty (Lesley Griffiths AM) has announced the intention to extend Help to Buy Wales beyond 31 March 2016.

In a statement published today, she said:

  • “The Welsh Government wants Wales to be a nation where everyone has access to a high quality, safe and affordable home. Fundamental to this is increasing the supply of new homes, across all tenures.”
  • “Over the past year, the Help to Buy – Wales scheme has become an important factor in stimulating the construction of new market housing in Wales through the support it offers to people purchasing those homes.”

While the precise details of the extended scheme are yet to be worked out, the Minister added, “I feel it is important to make the housing sector aware of our plan to extend Help to Buy – Wales, so developers can invest with confidence and buyers can make plans for the future.”
